won the Digital SME Award (DIMA) initiated by Visable in the category „Sustainability in Company „won.

Tipp-Oil takes back the containers free of charge, cleans them and refills them with its lubricants.
In the interview, Tipp Oil Managing Director Sebastian Maier reveals how the idea came about, how the system is being accepted and whether it is also financially viable.

Mr.Sebastian Maier, you received an award at DIMA for a digitally supported deposit system for plastic containers that avoids single-use waste. How did this idea develop in you?

I have been working in the raw materials sector in various countries for many years. In Asia and Africa in particular, there were and still are considerable problems with garbage disposal. In the B2B area, we export around 100,000 bottles and canisters in oil containers made of plastic every month – so it is obvious to ask yourself what can be done to protect the environment in this process. And it’s not just about mountains of plastic, the residual oil in the containers can also end up in the groundwater if it is not properly disposed of. The first pilot project started in Burkina Faso in 2018 and is now being implemented across almost the entire continent.

There is a deposit of between 25 cents and one euro per plastic container. How many canisters are really coming back?

Before Corona it was around 65 to 70 percent. So we had to order fewer plastics in that order of magnitude. However, due to the transport difficulties and the export ban during the pandemic, the proportion has decreased somewhat.

What is the cost-benefit factor for your company? On the one hand you save on purchasing, on the other hand the organization of the deposit system, the transport and the cleaning cost money …

The effort is indeed high, but we also benefit in other ways, not just from savings in purchasing plastics. Since then, customer loyalty has increased, sales have increased and awareness is growing continuously. And in the current situation, in which raw material prices are reaching record levels, we are of course a little more independent thanks to the deposit system. On average, an oil container can be reused for almost two years.

Has this increased awareness, which is increased by winning the DIMA, been reflected in new business deals?

So far we have only been in the B2B segment, but more and more German end consumers are expressing interest in Tipp-Oil products. We are therefore planning to cooperate with Globus Holding and ATU, who are enthusiastic about our recycling system. In addition, we hope that the award will give us new trading partners in Germany and other countries so that our deposit system can also be used in Europe.
